The White Cliffs and the Dover seafront are aggressive electrical environments. Salt aerosol from the Channel, driven by prevailing south-westerlies and cold easterlies, attacks every ferrous fitting within about 500m of the coast. If it is not spec'd right, it fails in 3-5 years.
IP ratings, in real terms
The IP rating on an outdoor fitting has two digits. The first is dust; the second is water. On the Dover coast, only the second digit matters much:
- IP44: "splashproof". Fine for a covered porch, not exposed. Fails within a couple of years.
- IP54: "dust-protected, splashproof". Marginal. OK for wall-mounted fittings in a sheltered spot.
- IP65: "dust-tight, water-jet resistant". The Dover coastal minimum.
- IP67: "immersion resistant". Buried fittings, in-ground uplights, anything on a slab that can flood.
- IP68: "continuous submersion". Pond lights.
Material grade
IP rating is about water. Material grade is about salt. Painted mild steel bollards - the cheapest option - corrode from the base upward, blistering the paint, and fail structurally in 3-5 years on the coast.
What actually lasts:
- 316 stainless steel: the marine grade. Costs 2-3x mild steel but lasts 20+ years even in direct sea-spray.
- Marine-grade aluminium (5000 or 6000-series with anodised finish): lighter, cheaper than 316, lasts 10-15 years.
- Powder-coated cast aluminium: mid-range. Lasts 8-12 years if the coating is uncompromised.
- Brass and bronze: the traditional coastal choice. Develops a patina, lasts 30+ years.
Cable and gland
External SWA (steel wire armoured) cable is the standard for outdoor runs. In coastal exposure the armour has to be properly earthed and the gland has to be a proper compression fit with a rubber seal - not the plastic click-fit that comes with cheaper kits. On buried runs we use conduit-in-trench (25mm rigid PVC) with the SWA inside, so the cable can be replaced without excavation.
Where corrosion actually attacks
Not the LED itself, and not the driver (usually potted in resin). It is the joints, the mounting hardware, and the earth continuity path. What we see fail first on a Dover coastal fitting:
- The mounting screws (rusted to the wall plug)
- The gasket between the fitting body and the mounting plate
- The internal terminal block (moisture ingress corrodes the copper)
- The earth wire connection to the fitting body (green paste)
- The paint on the fitting (surface only, but looks awful within 5 years)
What about smart lighting - Hue, Shelly, LIFX outdoor?
Smart outdoor fittings are usually IP44 or IP54 and are not built for coastal exposure. Philips Hue Outdoor works well 500m+ inland but degrades faster on the seafront. If you want smart on the coast, we run a standard IP65 marine-grade fitting on a Shelly relay in the loft (indoor-protected) rather than a smart fitting in the salt spray.
