Which charger
Every OZEV-approved charger is basically the same 7kW box with different software. What varies is the smart features and the app quality:
- Myenergi Zappi - the enthusiast pick. Best-in-class solar-diversion, Eco+ mode, physical dials for override. Ideal if you have or plan solar. British-made.
- Ohme Home Pro - the tariff pick. Best integration with Octopus Intelligent Go and dynamic tariffs.
- Hypervolt Home 3 - the aesthetic pick. Sharp design, LED accent.
- Wallbox Pulsar Plus - the small-footprint pick. Untethered, smallest 7kW box on the UK market. Good for narrow terraces where the meter box is on the front.
What UKPN needs from us
UK Power Networks is the distribution network operator for Dover and all of east Kent. Any EV charger installation up to 16A single-phase is covered by a G98 "connect and notify" - we install and then notify UKPN within 28 days. Anything larger (22kW three-phase, second unit that pushes past 16A) needs a G99 application before install, and can take 4 to 8 weeks for consent.
OZEV EVHS grant
The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme is closed to owner-occupiers as of April 2022. It is still open to renters, flat-owners and landlords - if you fit that category and want the £350 contribution, we handle the OZEV portal paperwork on your behalf.
Pricing
Straight install, wall-mounted, cable run under 5m, existing consumer unit has a spare way: £745 to £895 (charger included). Cable run over 5m, or a new dedicated garage sub-board required: £895 to £1,150. Combined with a fusebox upgrade: discount £150 off the combined price.
My Dover terrace has no off-street parking - can I have a charger?
The honest answer is usually no. OZEV does not fund public-highway solutions, and the DNO will not connect a charger that would need a lead trailed across a public footway. On streets like Castle Avenue or Priory Hill the terraces have no off-street parking. The best alternative is Dover District Council's on-street EV charging programme.
Timing
Half a day on-site for a standard install. UKPN notification submitted same day. We commission and test the unit before we leave.
