Kitchen downlights in Dover bungalows and dormer-bedroom top floors have an unusually high failure rate. The reason is almost always thermal build-up under a badly insulated fitting.
The physics
An LED downlight is not just an LED - it is an LED plus a driver (the small transformer that converts 240V AC into low-voltage DC). The LED itself is efficient and cool. The driver is not efficient. It dissipates 15-20% of the power draw as heat, and that heat has to go somewhere.
In a purpose-built modern ceiling with a proper thermal gap around each fitting, the heat rises into the loft void and dissipates. In a Dover kitchen retrofit where the fitting is jammed into a hole cut through the plaster of an older ceiling, and the loft insulation is loose-fill fibreglass sagged directly onto the top of the can, the driver cooks. Life expectancy drops from 25,000+ hours to 2,000-4,000 hours.
Fire-rated cans
A fire-rated downlight is about maintaining fire integrity of the ceiling. Under Building Regulations Approved Document B, the ceiling between a kitchen and the room above forms part of the fire compartment. A hole cut through it has to preserve either 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance. Fire-rated cans do this with an intumescent pad that expands and seals the hole under heat.
They are also designed to be safe when insulation is placed directly on top - but where most cheap fire-rated cans fail: they say "insulation-safe" on the box but they have no thermal cutout, so the driver still cooks, just more slowly.
What to actually spec
- Fire rating: 30-minute minimum, 60-minute if the loft above is a habitable room
- Insulation safety: "IC-4" or "IC-rated" - explicitly rated for insulation contact
- Thermal cutout: integrated thermal fuse that cuts the driver if it exceeds its rated temperature (usually 90 degC)
- Dimmable driver: if the circuit is on a dimmer, the driver has to be dimmable
- Warranty: minimum 5-year on the fitting, 3-year on the driver

Retrofitting into an existing hole
If you have a Dover kitchen with existing GU10 halogen holes cut in the ceiling, the cutout size matters. A typical old halogen can was 60-70mm; a modern fire-rated can is usually 65-75mm. Sometimes you can drop straight in; sometimes the hole needs enlarging or blanking off. We measure before we quote.
Can I put spotlights in a Dover Victorian ceiling?
Yes, but two catches. First: the lath-and-plaster ceilings in port-core terraces do not take a downlight can neatly. We either fit surface-mounted spots on a bar (often more period-sympathetic) or replace a section of ceiling with plasterboard. Second: if the property is Listed, downlights are usually refused under Listed Building Consent because they alter historic fabric.
